East Asia comprises China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan, representing a region of extraordinary economic power and cultural influence. The region has been shaped by thousands of years of Chinese civilization, which has influenced writing systems, philosophical traditions, artistic practices, and governmental structures throughout the area.
The region features dramatic geographical contrasts, from the vast Gobi Desert and steppes of Mongolia to the densely forested mountains of Japan and Korea, and from the Tibetan Plateau to the extensive coastlines facing the Pacific Ocean. East Asia experiences diverse climates ranging from the frigid winters of northern China and Mongolia to the humid subtropical conditions of southern China and Japan.
