Asia Map Quiz
Test your knowledge of Asian geography by clicking the correct country on the map.
What the quiz covers
The quiz asks you to find every one of the 49 countries profiled on AsiaMap.net, one at a time and in a random order, on a map of the whole continent. There are no hints and only one click per question, so it tests whether you really know where each country is, not just its name. The countries come from all five regions used on the site: 6 in East Asia, 11 in Southeast Asia, 9 in South Asia (including Iran), 5 in Central Asia and 18 in West Asia.
The hardest questions are usually the small countries — Bahrain, Singapore, Brunei, the Maldives, Lebanon, Qatar and Palestine — and the clusters where several similar-sized countries meet: the three South Caucasus states between the Black and Caspian seas, the Gulf coast from Kuwait to the UAE, and Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the western edge of China. Zooming in before you click makes these much easier. If you also want to learn capital cities, the capitals of Asia page lists every capital, and the flags of Asia page covers each national flag.
How to play the Asia map quiz
- Press Start Quiz (below the introduction). The 49 countries are shuffled into a random order.
- Read the prompt, for example "Where is Laos? Click on the map."
- Click or tap the country on the map. You can zoom with the + and − buttons, the mouse wheel or a pinch; this helps with small countries such as Bahrain, Singapore, Brunei and the Maldives.
- A pop-up tells you whether you were right. If not, it names the country you actually clicked, which is a useful way to learn neighbours.
- Each country gets one attempt, and the next question follows straight away. After the 49th question your score appears as a number out of 49. Press Start Quiz again for a new, reshuffled round.
Tips for learning the map of Asia by region
Trying to memorise 49 countries as one list is hard. It is much easier to fix a few large "anchor" countries first and then learn their neighbours region by region.
East Asia
Start with China, then Mongolia to its north. The Korean Peninsula juts out to the east, with North Korea at the top and South Korea below. Japan is the arc of islands across the sea, and Taiwan is the island off China's south-east coast.
Southeast Asia
On the mainland, work west to east: Myanmar, Thailand, Laos (the only landlocked one), Cambodia, then Vietnam along the coast. Offshore, Malaysia is split between the peninsula and Borneo, Singapore sits at the peninsula's southern tip, Brunei is a small enclave on Borneo's north coast, the Philippines lie to the north-east and Timor-Leste is at the eastern end of the Indonesian island chain.
South Asia
Use India as the anchor. Pakistan is to its west and Bangladesh to its east. Nepal and Bhutan sit along the Himalaya on India's northern border, with Nepal the larger and further west. Sri Lanka is the island off India's southern tip and the Maldives are the scattered atolls to the south-west. Afghanistan and Iran lie further west.
Central Asia
The five "stans": Kazakhstan is the huge one to the north; Uzbekistan sits in the middle; Turkmenistan lies to the south-west on the Caspian Sea; and the two small, mountainous countries in the east are Kyrgyzstan (north) and Tajikistan (south).
West Asia
Split it into blocks. Saudi Arabia fills most of the Arabian Peninsula, with Yemen in the south-west corner, Oman in the south-east and the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait along the Gulf. The eastern Mediterranean coast holds Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine, with Jordan inland. Iraq lies between Syria and Iran, Turkey spans Anatolia, the Caucasus countries (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan) sit between the Black and Caspian seas, and Cyprus is the island in the eastern Mediterranean.
All 49 countries in the quiz, by region
Every country below can come up in the quiz. Each name links to that country's map page, which is a good place to revise a country you keep getting wrong. Countries are grouped as in our country data, which follows the UN geoscheme: Iran is counted in South Asia (9 countries) rather than West Asia (18). Many maps place Iran in West Asia instead — see the West Asia map for that view.

Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in the Asia map quiz?
All 49 countries profiled on AsiaMap.net. Each one is asked once per round, in a freshly shuffled order, so a full quiz is 49 questions and your final score is shown out of 49.
Is the Asia map quiz timed?
No. There is no clock or countdown, so you can take as long as you need over each question. If you want a timed challenge, run a stopwatch on your phone and try to beat your own time.
Is there a level 2 or a harder version?
The quiz has a single level that always covers all 49 countries. For a gentler start, try the Asia map game, which uses 10 countries per round and allows unlimited retries; then come back to the quiz, where you get one attempt per country.
Is the quiz suitable for kids?
It is free and needs no account, and the questions only ask for country names, so older children can play on their own. Younger children may find 49 questions in one go a lot, and small countries such as Bahrain or Singapore are fiddly to click, so playing together and zooming in on the map helps.
Do I need to sign up or pay?
No. The quiz runs in your web browser with no registration, download or payment.
Why is Russia not in the quiz?
Most of Russia's land lies in Asia, but its capital and most of its population are in Europe, and it is usually classed as a European country. The quiz follows AsiaMap.net's list of 49 Asian countries, which does not include Russia. See is Russia in Asia? for more.
