Asia Distance Calculator
Find the straight-line (great-circle) distance and approximate flight time between major Asian cities. Choose any two of the 22 cities below; for the most-searched pairs, a link to a detailed route page with a map, time difference and facts about both cities appears under the result.
How the calculator works
The distance shown is the great-circle distance: the shortest path between two points over the surface of the Earth, calculated with the haversine formula on a sphere with a mean radius of 6,371 km. Each city is represented by a single point near its centre, so the figure is the distance between city centres, not between airports. Great-circle routes look curved on a flat map because the map projection stretches the globe; a flight from Istanbul to Tokyo, for example, heads north-east over Central Asia rather than following a straight line on the map.
The flight time is a rough guide only. It assumes an average speed of 800 km/h plus 30 minutes for take-off, climb and landing, so Delhi to Dubai (about 2,200 km) comes out at around 3 h 15 m and Singapore to Tokyo (about 5,300 km) at about 7 h 10 m. Real scheduled times are often longer, because aircraft follow air-traffic routes rather than the exact great circle, detour around closed airspace, and meet headwinds — eastbound flights across the jet stream over East Asia are usually faster than westbound ones.
Among the 22 cities, the shortest pair is Kuala Lumpur–Singapore, about 310 km apart, and the longest is Jakarta–Istanbul, about 9,450 km. Tokyo to Istanbul, at about 8,940 km, shows how wide the continent is from east to west. Time differences between the cities range from none at all to six hours between Istanbul (UTC+3) and Tokyo or Seoul (UTC+9); see time zones in Asia.
Popular distance routes
The busiest routes between these cities have a dedicated page with a route map, flight time, time difference and facts about both cities. Each page covers both directions — the distance from Seoul to Jakarta is the same as from Jakarta to Seoul. For any other pair, use the calculator above.
