Distance from Jakarta to Tokyo
🇮🇩 Jakarta, Indonesia → 🇯🇵 Tokyo, Japan
The dashed line joins the two city centres; the true shortest path on the globe is a great-circle arc, and real flight paths also bend around restricted airspace and follow airways.
Route overview
The flight crosses the equator over Borneo, then heads north-east over Sarawak and Brunei, across the southern South China Sea, Palawan and the island of Luzon in the Philippines, and out over the Philippine Sea. It passes east of Okinawa and approaches Tokyo along Japan’s Pacific coast. Nonstop flights operate between Soekarno–Hatta (CGK) and both Tokyo airports, Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT).
History and investment
Japan occupied what was then the Dutch East Indies from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared independence two days after Japan’s surrender. After diplomatic ties were set up in 1958, with a reparations agreement, Japan became one of Indonesia’s largest aid donors and investors. Japanese carmakers dominate the Indonesian car market, and Jakarta’s MRT, which opened in 2019, was built with Japanese financing and engineering. Indonesia in turn supplies Japan with coal, natural gas and nickel, and a growing number of Indonesians go to Japan for work and training. Tokyo is two hours ahead of Jakarta all year.
