The dashed line joins the two city centres; the true shortest path on the globe is a great-circle arc, and real flight paths also bend around restricted airspace and follow airways.

One of the world’s busiest air shuttles

The flight lasts barely an hour gate to gate, yet Kuala Lumpur–Singapore is one of the busiest international air routes on the planet. Most flights run between KLIA (KUL) and Changi (SIN); some smaller aircraft use Subang (SZB), which is much closer to central Kuala Lumpur.

By train or bus

Surface travel is a real alternative here. Since December 2025, Malaysia’s electric ETS trains have run all the way from KL Sentral to JB Sentral in Johor Bahru, taking a little over four hours. The Shuttle Tebrau train then crosses the Causeway to Woodlands in about five minutes. The new Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link, with immigration at both ends, is due to replace the shuttle. Its operator currently expects passenger service to start in early 2027. Coaches on the North–South Expressway take around five to six hours depending on traffic at the border, using either the 1924 Causeway or the Second Link bridge at Tuas. A proposed KL–Singapore high-speed railway was cancelled in 2021, though both governments have since discussed reviving it.

Once one country

Singapore joined Malaysia when the federation was formed in 1963 and left it to become independent in August 1965. The two remain deeply linked. Singapore still buys water from Johor under a 1962 agreement, and hundreds of thousands of Malaysians cross the border every day to work. More in Malaysia vs Singapore.
