The dashed line joins the two city centres; the true shortest path on the globe is a great-circle arc, and real flight paths also bend around restricted airspace and follow airways.

The route

Singapore lies almost straight south of Bangkok. The great-circle line runs over the Gulf of Thailand, reaches the Malaysian coast near Kota Bharu and then follows the east coast of the peninsula through Terengganu and Pahang before crossing Johor to Changi (SIN). It is one of Southeast Asia’s core air corridors, with frequent nonstop flights from both Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK).

Doing it without flying

An overland trip is entirely possible, though it takes a couple of days with stops. The rail route goes from Bangkok to the Padang Besar border, then by Malaysian ETS train to Kuala Lumpur and on to JB Sentral in Johor Bahru, now that the electrified line reaches the south. From there a five-minute shuttle train crosses the Causeway to Woodlands in Singapore. Long-distance buses also link the cities via Hat Yai and Kuala Lumpur.

Why the link matters

Thailand, the only Southeast Asian country never colonised, and Singapore, a former British trading post, were both founding members of ASEAN when it was created in Bangkok in 1967. Singapore is one of the largest foreign investors in Thailand. The two capitals compete as regional hubs for business, conferences and transit passengers.
