Distance from Bangkok to Hanoi
🇹🇭 Bangkok, Thailand → 🇻🇳 Hanoi, Vietnam
The dashed line joins the two city centres; the true shortest path on the globe is a great-circle arc, and real flight paths also bend around restricted airspace and follow airways.
Over Isan, the Mekong and the Annamites
Heading north-east out of Bangkok, the direct line passes over the Khorat Plateau of north-east Thailand (Isan), crosses the Mekong River into Laos and then climbs over the Annamite Range before dropping into the Red River delta, where Hanoi sits. It is a short regional hop: nonstop flights are frequent, from both Bangkok airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK), to Hanoi’s Noi Bai (HAN), about 25 km north of the city centre.
Going overland
There is no through train. The usual land route runs north to Nong Khai, over the Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge to Vientiane, then east by long-distance bus across Laos and through one of the mountain border crossings into Vietnam. It is slow, but popular with travellers who want to see Laos on the way. A longer alternative goes via Cambodia and southern Vietnam.
Two Mekong neighbours
Thailand and Vietnam do not share a border, yet for centuries their kingdoms competed for influence over the lands between them, today’s Laos and Cambodia. Both are now members of ASEAN and the Mekong-Lancang cooperation frameworks, and they compete directly as rice exporters and as destinations for manufacturing investment.
