Across the South China Sea

From Taoyuan (TPE), the great-circle line heads southwest across the southern end of the Taiwan Strait and then over the open South China Sea. It passes east of the Paracel Islands and west of the main Spratly group, then reaches Singapore from the northeast, passing west of Indonesia's Natuna Islands. It is a sea crossing almost from start to finish, and nonstop flights to Changi (SIN) are well established. Some itineraries also stop in Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City.

Business and people

Singapore and Taiwan do not have formal diplomatic relations, as Singapore recognises the People's Republic of China, but they maintain trade offices and close economic ties. In 2013 they signed an economic partnership agreement, known as ASTEP, covering trade in goods and services. Taiwanese electronics firms and Singaporean investors are active in each other's markets.

Many Chinese Singaporeans trace their roots to the same southern Fujian region as many Taiwanese families, so Hokkien is widely heard in both places. The food scenes are related too, from bak kut teh and oyster omelettes to night markets in Taipei and hawker centres in Singapore.
