The dashed line joins the two city centres; the true shortest path on the globe is a great-circle arc, and real flight paths also bend around restricted airspace and follow airways.

The capital and the commercial hub

Delhi is India’s political capital. Mumbai is its financial centre and home to the Reserve Bank of India, the main stock exchanges and the Hindi film industry. The air shuttle between them is one of the busiest domestic routes in the world, with departures every few minutes at peak times. In Delhi flights use Indira Gandhi International (DEL). In Mumbai they use Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (BOM) and, increasingly, the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), which opened to commercial flights in December 2025.

Flying south-west, aircraft cross the Aravalli hills and plains of eastern Rajasthan and the Malwa plateau of Madhya Pradesh, then descend past the Western Ghats to the Konkan coast.

Rail and road

The two cities are also joined by one of India’s best-known trains, the Mumbai Rajdhani Express, which runs overnight via Kota and Vadodara in about 16 hours. By road, the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway is opening in stages. Once it is complete it will cut driving time sharply compared with the older national highways. Freight moves along the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, built to take cargo trains off the passenger network.
