Distance from Beijing to Hong Kong
🇨🇳 Beijing, China → 🇭🇰 Hong Kong, China
The dashed line joins the two city centres; the true shortest path on the globe is a great-circle arc, and real flight paths also bend around restricted airspace and follow airways.
Due south through the heart of China
This is an almost north–south route. From Beijing the line passes over Hebei, Henan and Hubei, crosses the Yangtze near Wuhan and continues through Hunan and Guangdong to the Pearl River Delta. It is a corridor that roughly follows the country's main north–south railways. Flights run from Beijing Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX) to Hong Kong International (HKG) at Chek Lap Kok.
The train alternative
Since the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link opened in 2018, direct high-speed trains have run between Beijing West station and Hong Kong West Kowloon. The fastest services take a little over eight hours, calling at cities such as Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Overnight high-speed sleeper trains were added in 2024. Mainland border formalities are handled inside West Kowloon station, so passengers clear immigration before boarding or on arrival.
Two systems, one country
Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997 and is now a Special Administrative Region of China with its own currency, legal system and immigration controls. Beijing is the seat of the national government. Many mainland companies list their shares in Hong Kong, which remains the main financial gateway between China and the rest of the world.
