The dashed line joins the two city centres; the true shortest path on the globe is a great-circle arc, and real flight paths also bend around restricted airspace and follow airways.

Desert all the way

The flight heads almost due west across the Arabian Peninsula. It leaves the UAE coast, skirts the base of the Qatar peninsula, crosses Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province near the Al-Ahsa oasis and the red dunes of the Dahna before reaching Riyadh on the Najd plateau. Nonstop flights between Dubai International (DXB) and King Khalid International (RUH) are frequent. Despite the short distance, the cities sit in different time zones: Riyadh is on UTC+3, an hour behind Dubai.

Driving it

The two cities are also connected by road. The main crossing is Ghuwaifat on the UAE side and Al Batha on the Saudi side, at the western end of Abu Dhabi emirate, followed by a long highway across the desert via the Eastern Province. The trip takes the best part of a day, and the border formalities can be lengthy. The Gulf states have long planned a shared GCC railway, and the UAE’s Etihad Rail network is being built to the Saudi border, but there is no passenger train between the two cities yet.

Partners and rivals

Saudi Arabia and the UAE are close allies and the Arab world’s two largest economies. They also compete. Riyadh is pushing to attract multinational regional headquarters, many of them historically based in Dubai, as part of its Vision 2030 programme. See Saudi Arabia vs UAE.

Travel note: airports and airspace in the Gulf region, including Dubai, were closed or restricted at times during the 2026 war involving Iran. Check the current status with your airline before travelling.
