At a glance
Israel and Iran are both located in Asia (Western Asia and Southern Asia respectively). Iran has the larger population — about 10× the population of Israel, while Iran covers more land area.
For full geographic detail, see the Israel map and the Iran map.
Two very different countries
Israel lies on the eastern Mediterranean and is one of the smallest countries in Asia. Iran covers a large plateau between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf and has many times Israel's land area and population. They do not border each other. Iraq, Jordan and Syria lie between them.
Israel's main language is Hebrew, and Arabic has a special status; the majority is Jewish, with a large Arab minority. Iran speaks Persian, and Shia Islam is the state religion. Iran also has one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world, and the largest in the Middle East outside Israel.
From partners to adversaries
Before 1979 the two had close informal ties. Iran under the Shah recognised Israel de facto in 1950, and the two cooperated on trade, oil and security. The Islamic Revolution ended that. The new government cut relations and made opposition to Israel a central part of its foreign policy.
For decades the conflict was indirect. Iran supported armed groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel opposed Iran's nuclear programme, and both sides were accused of covert attacks and assassinations. The two exchanged direct strikes for the first time in April and October 2024. In June 2025 a 12-day war saw Israeli strikes across Iran, Iranian missile barrages on Israel and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. A larger war began on 28 February 2026 with US and Israeli strikes that killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. A ceasefire agreed in April 2026 broke down in July, and as of October 2026 the conflict was unresolved.
Economies
Israel has a high-income economy built on technology, defence, pharmaceuticals and services, and its natural gas is produced offshore. Iran has some of the world's largest oil and gas reserves, but sanctions have limited its exports for many years, and war damage has added to the strain.
Travel and contact
There are no diplomatic relations and no direct travel. Iran does not recognise Israel, and Iranian law bars its citizens from visiting Israel. Travellers whose passports show an Israeli stamp may be refused entry to Iran. Check government travel advisories before any trip to the region.
