What is the highest mountain in Asia?
Mount Everest, at 8,849 m (29,032 ft) on the Nepal–China border, is the highest mountain in Asia and the world. All 14 of the world's peaks above 8,000 m are in Asia.
Everest's official height of 8,848.86 m was announced jointly by Nepal and China in 2020 after a new survey. The border between the two countries runs across the summit. In Nepal the mountain is called Sagarmatha, and in Tibetan Chomolungma.
Asia has every one of the world's 14 peaks above 8,000 metres. All of them are in the Himalaya or the neighbouring Karakoram, created by the collision of the Indian Plate with Eurasia. Ten are in the Himalaya and four in the Karakoram, and eight are wholly or partly in Nepal. The highest mountain outside Asia, Aconcagua in Argentina (6,961 m), would not make the top hundred in Asia.
