Patterns in the ranking
- Eight Asian countries have more than 100 million people: India, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam.
- Extreme concentration. The 25 least populous countries, from Kazakhstan down, have about 162.5 million people between them, fewer than Indonesia alone.
- South Asia is the most populous sub-region, with 2.09 billion people (43%), ahead of East Asia (1.64 billion). Central Asia has only 83.6 million.
- Diverging trends. China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are shrinking, while Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen are among the faster-growing countries, so the order in the middle of the table will keep shifting.
- The smallest populations are Bhutan, the Maldives and Brunei, each under one million.
